Marrakech, A Dream Destination
A major city in the Kingdom of Morocco, Marrakech is a dream destination for many. As “The Telegraph” states, Marrakech is where Europe, Africa, and the Middle East mingle and merge. Rich in culture, embellished in magnificent palaces, and filled with many attractions and activities, Marrakech is truly worth the visit.
It is good for you to know that Marrakech is divided into two—the historical center and the modern district. Upon visiting, you will be able to see both the medieval life and the luxurious and modern life in Marrakech. The new and modern Marrakech has many modern restaurants and international high-fashion boutiques. Outside the original city walls of Marrakech, there are wide boulevards, cafés, and beautiful gardens, just like in Paris. In the new Marrakech district, there is a Yves Saint Laurent Museum, which is named after a french designer, that portrays Marrakech’s reputation for designer and luxury shopping. There is also a garden that is named after Yves Saint Laurent that was a property restored by this french designer. In this garden, there is the Islamic Art Museum of Marrakech, and Berber Museum. In fact, Yves Saint Laurent’s ashes were scattered in this garden, when he passed away in 2008.
Old Marrakech represents the medieval side of this beautiful city. Djemaa el Fna, is located in this part of the city, and it contains hotels and cafés where tourists can enjoy their stay at. There are also many local vendors that will sell you different cultural souvenirs. On this side of town, you will come across storytellers and snake charmers that will show you a snippet of the Morrocan culture.
Tourists going to Marrakech should remember that Morocco is a conservative country. In other words, tourists need to make sure that they are appropriately dressed as they roam the city, so that they don’t get unwanted negative attention. Clothes that will cover most of your body is the safest bet when travelling to Marrakech, such as knee skirts or linen pants. Bare shoulders and arms are sometimes also a problem. Make sure that you take a scarf with you when you travel, because a covering will always come in handy if you spontaneously visit a museum.
Visiting Marrakech should include visiting Marrakech Souks. This is a “must” during your visit, because these souks will never disappoint you. Souks are ancient marketplaces that are huge and filled with local vendors and souks represent the business side of Marrakech.
There is so much more to Marrakech than historical attractions that tourists can visit and take pictures in. Marrakech is a place of inspiration. It is a place where creativity thrives and culture reigns. As you step off an airplane onto Marrakech soil, prepare your eyes to see color. Different buildings will be an array of different vibrant colors and people will be wearing clothing that are colorful and creatively designed.
